St. George

St. George

Saint George was born in Cappadocia (a city in modern-day Turkey) in the year 280 AD. Having been raised in his early childhood by two devout Christian parents he was steadfast in the faith. After the death of his father however, he was granted his father’s position as a soldier of the Roman guard at the age of twenty. At that time, Christian persecution was rampant, and many were being sent to prison, martyred, or even enslaved. St. George used his wealth to ransom and free many of these poor people who were enslaved and imprisoned. The Roman emperor at that time was Diocletian, who was infamous for his persecution of Christians. When Diocletian heard of Saint George’s steadfast faith, he offered him great power and wealth if he worshiped the emperor’s idols. The local governor even offered him his own daughter to marry. Saint George declined all these offers and held his faith, and the governor subjected him to some of the most inhumane tortures known to man. However, God used Saint George as a catalyst and every time he would strengthen and heal him. The emperor even attempted to poison him through a drink which had no effect on the saint. He ordered his body to be squeezed using torture methods to points which no human could endure. These public trials and tortures only increased the number of believers, changing many non-believers to Christ. Throughout much of this it is said multiple miracles happened such as raising the dead and curing a mute, deaf, and blind boy. After failing to break the saint’s faith, Emperor Diocletian ordered his beheading and thus he received the crown of martyrdom. May his holy blessings be with us all, and glory be to God forever. Amen.
